I CAN NEVER WALK BY A TRUCK RACK without stopping to examine the photographic possibilities. The reason for my attraction is twofold. First, truck racks are the most mundane, ubiquitous objects imaginable. No one thinks twice about them. They never have a new paint job or a sleek design. They are never ever noticed. They are simple utilitarian devices which are totally nonspecial in every way, and for me that makes them sort of special.

Secondly, I like to take geometric photos in which things line up precisely, and truck racks provide great possibilities for such photos. The racks are usually rectangular and usually of thin metal piping. From a few feet away, they are practically see-through. This allows the rack to be part of the photograph while opening up the entire background behind the rack for unrelated material. So the photographs are really less about truck racks than about how the racks fit into their surroundings.
