I AM ATTRACTED TO PHOTOGRAPHING ALL SORTS OF graffiti and signs but the ones I love best are interactive signs. Interactive signs are messages designed to communicate one thing but which inadvertently interact with other parts of the environment to create alternate meanings. Many times these are commercial billboards interacting with each other. Sometimes a single sign can be ironic by virtue of location or circumstance. The key is that the interaction must be inadvertent.
I love interactive signs because 1) They are often very amusing, and 2) They are a reminder that hidden subtext is everywhere, in virtually every attempt at communication, whether it is intended or not. Warning: Some of the interactions are obscure and may require a little extra effort to make the leap, but diligence will be rewarded. September 2003 |
