SURREAL SERIAL IS AN ordered sequence of 55 photos. Each neighboring pair of photos shares some specific unique commonality. Commonalities encompass a variety of important issues such as television, death, and little squiggly lines.
The idea was to create a photo project which appears to be random, yet with an underlying order. I used an extremely wide variety of photographs because I wanted each pair to have virtually nothing in common but that one thing. The combination of randomness and order can sometimes seem absurd, maybe even surreal. Surreal Serial mimics the act of searching for photographable material (at least, my way of searching). To me the world at face value appears incredibly disordered and chaotic. Yet with patience and luck, small synchronicities make themselves visible. The texture of a wig matches trees behind it, or a crowd of people poses like a nearby statue. These things are out there in certain places and times, but it is easy to stumble right by unaware, and of course different photographers will stumble by or stop for different things. To find one of these absurd synchronicities and to capture it on film is a true rush. It is basically what keeps me photographing every day. The photographs are (except for #52) all from 2002. None was made with the intention of matching it with any other photo. The sequencing was done later on a whim. Surreal Serial last update: 2002 |
