Yeah, I know fairs have been shot to death, but I love to photograph them still. The photo taking opportunities are usually quite good. Many people have cameras and photography blends in well. There is a good mix of static and transitional scenes which lends itself to unusual juxtapositions. But above all it is the diversity of the crowd which I enjoy most. You get everyone from the rural farmer who comes in to town once every summer to show his prize hog to teens on dates to urban yuppies venturing into what they consider the hinterland. All ages, incomes, races, and backgrounds are represented, and in a setting which is by definition completely public. There is no private space. All of this at just a fair.
Just Fairs is a collection of photos taken at various fairs in the greater Portland region. It is inspired by and dedicated to Joseph Lawton, whose photography of fairs in upstate New York I consider completely mindblowing no matter how many times I return to it.
