Since the age of around 10, almost every day of my life has begun with me reading a newspaper cover to cover. On the street my addiction carries over. I can't help from glancing at the headlines. I'm curious how the various papers get their message out, if they shout the same message or talk over each other or if, as happens more lately, the message is completely irrelevant. Most of our inanimate surroundings remain relatively constant from day to day. Newspaper headlines are one of the few things guaranteed to change on a daily basis. When you shoot one, you've captured something that will be gone the next day forever. For me this seems to get at the core of photography, its ability to snatch a moment out of time, freeze it, and hold it up for examination. Extra! Extra! last update: February 2009 |
