BIG PINK is the U.S. Bancorp building at the corner of 6th and Burnside in Portland. I've heard it called Big Pink in various places, probably referring to its color and phallic nature. There's a restaurant on the top floor.
I photograph all over town and I am constantly amazed at how consistently this building pops up on the horizon from every vantage point. It's like Portland's Polaris, marking the direction of downtown from any point. It's a fun structure to work with photographically. It can either hide behind other objects or come to the foreground and be a star. Like most of my projects this one wasn't undertaken with any goal in mind. I just noticed one day that this building was in a lot of my photos, so it became its own category. This is about the time I made a conscious decision not to photograph it any more, to avoid the possiblity of making a photograph just to fit some stupid label. Big Pink last update: June 2006 |
